For the first time since he took office as U.S. president, Joe Biden will meet with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday in Geneva.
The White House said that the leaders would discuss the full range of issues, including Ukraine and Belarus.
Ben Hodges, former commander of the U.S. Army in Europe told the Accent that the issue of Georgia should also be discussed at the two leaders’ meeting.
In 2011, when Mr. Joe Biden served as the vice president of the United States, during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin he criticized Russia's occupation of Georgian territory.
“President Biden should highlight Russia’s continued illegal occupation of 20% of Georgian territory and put pressure on the Kremlin, as well as on France and Germany, to get those troops out of there.” he told the Accent.
According to Hodges, the U.S. President should also tell Russian counterpart that “the United States is developing a strategy for the greater Black Sea region, including Ukraine and Georgia as well as the rest of the South Caucasus and the Balkans and of course Turkey.”
“He can even say we don’t have it set yet, but he’s got his best people on it. And that strategy will include strong economic investment and challenging every one of Russia’s illegal activities in the Black Sea region, as well as a larger, more dynamic military presence, along with other non-littoral NATO allies. But it’s important that Georgia and Ukraine are doing all that they can to ensure strong institutions of liberal democratic nations and make themselves more attractive to American/Western investment, such as reviving the Anaklia Port project which would do much to make Georgia a true portal between Europe and Eurasia, which, of course the Kremlin does not want,” Hodges added.
