The Serafimovskoye cemetery in St. Petersburg is currently under police guard, with road closures in the surrounding area.
The heightened security comes amid speculation on local Telegram channels that private military company Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin may be laid to rest at the cemetery, which is typically reserved for military burials.
Official sources have not confirmed the date or location of Prigozhin's funeral, nor whether Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to attend.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that he was unaware of the timing and arrangements of the funeral, emphasizing that decisions regarding the ceremony would be made in consultation with Prigozhin's family.
Some context: Russian officials confirmed on Sunday that Prigozhin was among the 10 people killed when a plane crashed on Wednesday, two months after the Wagner chief led a failed mutiny against Moscow.
Russia's Investigative Committee verified Prigozhin's death after carrying out genetic tests. They confirmed that the remains of all 10 passengers listed on board were found in the wreckage.
