The U.S. State Department strongly urges the government of Georgia to work with stakeholders across Georgian society to enact and implement the steps laid out by the European Commission.

"The European Council’s unanimous decision to grant European perspective status to Georgia is an important step, which recognizes the European aspirations of the Georgian people. This step keeps Georgia on the path to EU membership. We remain committed to working with Georgia’s government as it undertakes the reforms called for by the European Commission," a State Department Spokesperson told the Accent.

"The road to EU candidate status is clear and achievable." the Spokesperson added.

The U.S. State Department emphasizes the causes of political polarization in Georgia:

"The government’s actions, including stalling or moving backward on important democratic reforms, have created setbacks. These actions also have deepened polarization rather than unifying the country around the core issues of Euro-Atlantic integration.

This is despite the clear desire of the people of Georgia for EU membership and Euro-Atlantic integration.

The United States remains committed to working with Georgia to make the reforms needed to meet its Euro-Atlantic goals".

"We urge Georgia to demonstrate its commitment to EU integration by adopting the reforms necessary to move forward on this path," the Spokesperson added.

On June 17, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the Commission recommends candidate status for Ukraine and Moldova with an understanding that the countries carry on necessary reforms, while it recommends a European perspective to Georgia, with the country first required to meet conditions before reaching candidate status.

On his part, European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi noted that „on democracy, we would like to see the end of the political polarization that has characterized the country, we need the cooperation of all political parties and delivery of the agreement that was reached with the facilitation of the European Union.“

On 23 June 2022, the European Council discussed Georgia's EU membership application. The European Council stated that it was ready to grant the status of candidate country to Georgia once the priorities specified in the Commission’s opinion on Georgia’s membership application have been addressed.
