Vice-Chair of the Delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, member of the EU-Georgia Parliamentary Association Committee, MEP Marketa Gregorova has said that there is support in the European Parliament for Georgia to receive the candidacy status, however, there is no the same position in other EU institutions.
"In the European Parliament, there is definitely support for Georgia to receive the candidacy status. However, in other EU institutions, we hear more and more voices of a restraint. It is now very difficult to say whether Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia will receive the candidacy status - but it should be a let down, if something is slower than expected. The EU made it clear on several occassions that it supports its eastern neighbourhood and there are plans for other means of help and support. Both Moldova and Ukraine for instance received a financial help, for Ukraine some other economic benefits, such as a zero tarrifs. So, the attitude is clear: we are here for each other. Some steps might get blocked by individual Member States of the EU, but it does not waiver the support of the EU as a whole", - Gregorova told the Accent.
Tbilisi followed Kyiv’s suit and signed the EU membership application on March 3, in the early days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Georgia gave in the first part of its EU Questionnaire on May 2 and it gave the second part of its EU Questionnaire on May 10. Tbilisi is awaiting the European Commission’s opinion in June.
