GYLA: Prosecution due to evaluative judgments against politicians creates a precedent of mass censorship - this is an unjustified restriction of freedom of expression and has a chilling effect

According to the Young Lawyers Association, prosecution of citizens, activists, journalists and politicians for their opinions expressed on social media constitutes an unjustified restriction on freedom of expression and creates a chilling effect.
According to GYLA, Georgian Dream aims to instill fear in society, “so that people refrain from critical evaluation of the actions of the Georgian Dream and politicians.”
“Posts published on social media, if they do not contain a threat that carries a real risk and are directed at politicians who have a high obligation of tolerance, are protected by freedom of expression. Any judicial interpretation made contrary to this standard will be a precedent for mass censorship.”
The above constitutes an unjustified restriction on freedom of expression, creates a chilling effect and aims to instill fear in society, so that people refrain from critical evaluation of the actions of the Georgian Dream and politicians," - reads the statement issued by GYLA.
