US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced a visa restriction policy for undermining democracy in Georgia and as well as a comprehensive review of bilateral cooperation between the United States and Georgia.

"The Department of State is implementing a new visa restriction policy for Georgia that will apply to individuals who are responsible for or complicit in undermining democracy in Georgia, as well as their family members. This includes individuals responsible for suppressing civil society and freedom of peaceful assembly in Georgia through a campaign of violence or intimidation," he said in a statement on May 23.

Blinken does not specify who will be affected.

When asked about the list of individuals, who will be affected, a State Department spokesperson told Accent the following:

"Under U.S. law, individual visa records are confidential, and we cannot provide details on who is or will be affected. The policy covers those believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Georgia and Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic future. Individuals may be identified under this policy for actions aimed at undermining democracy, including by intimidation of voters through threats and physical violence, the manipulation of vote results, and other activity that undermines Georgia’s democratic process. With this visa restriction policy, we are sending a clear message that those who undermine Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic future, and its democracy, are not welcome in the United States."
